Nappy Roots’ show abruptly stopped Comments
Grammy-nominated rap group Nappy Roots was in Corvallis to play a charity show on Saturday night, and things didn’t go so well. That’s a huge understatement.
Essentially – to paraphrase a version of events collected from the Corvallis Police Department – there were problems with the sound system, making people pissed, so the group stopped performing.
And this, of course, kept people pissed, and probably elevated some to a level of super-pissiness.
I’ve been told by the Police Chief that there weren’t any arrests, though. But there were about 1,500 people there, and that’s a lot of unhappy folks. After all, people had paid good money to see a good show by a good group. (Hey, if you were there, please comment and share your insights.)
Nappy Roots wasn’t too happy about how things went down in flames, either. Here’s a statement on the abrupt stoppage from Nappy Roots publicist Jonathan Hay.
“Nappy Roots is constantly willing to do a charity event – - as we diligently work hard to give back to the people. The event from Saturday night intended to be an extremely positive situation, however, things don’t always go as planned. First off, we were late taking the stage because of delays at the airport and there wasn’t anything we could do about that. When we took the stage, some of the people in the audience were blantaly intoxicated and frustrated about us being late. To make things worse, the microphones kept cutting out sound and it was a complete equipment failure. The crowd couldn’t hear and they were getting frustrated at the lack of sound. Nappy Roots performed their hit single, Awnaw and tried to fight through the technical difficulties, however things started escalating when they went on to one of their other hit singles, Po’ Folks. People started throwing things and it was quickly turning into a dangerous environment. They stopped their song in the middle of the second song. They invited people to Club Platinum, free of charge, so the local fans could see a better show. Nappy stayed after to meet with the fans and it turned into being a real good time for everyone. If Nappy didn’t stop the performance when they did, it could have turned into a devastating evening, or even a potentially fatal situation as there wasn’t hardly any security, of any at all. Once again, we are very sorry and if people want to email me at – <mailto:jonhay@nappyroots.com> jonhay@nappyroots.com, I will gladly send you some Nappy Roots remixes, rare songs and some other cool Nappy stuff for your inconvenience. Once again, we are very sorry.”
